If you can see the "show contact info" dropdown below, I follow you. If you want me to, ask and I'll think about it.

I really need like, a good (emphasis on that word) IM that somehow doesn't rely on someone else's servers. IRC is nice and all, but dealing with servers that could just go down at any time because no one can maintain them anymore is also a problem
IRC is also pretty terrible for messaging.
but yeah the eternal problem with all chat apps is that someone needs to pay for the server, somewhere, and most people aren't willing to for themselves.
I wish there was (if there's not already?) p2p messaging. I'm sure there's like a bunch of really good reasons why there's not tho >.<
yes, you either have to bootstrap 50 million people at the same time, or still use the normal networks and still have to deal with the limitations therein, just with a lot of extra steps.
most p2p that's over the internet topology has superpeers for this, which like, same problem with hosting
honestly KDE Connect might be well positioned to become the host for the new instant messaging app, since a lot of people even on Windows use it for notification synching, using phone as a touchpad, and sharing clipboards across your computers and phones
since it already does local network p2p stuff kinda sorta and already installed by a lot of people
it's not a chat app, but would be a great way to piggyback
