on the Linux side of things I use Remmina, since it also supports RDP for connecting to Windows machines (or recent GNOME installs that use RDP instead of VNC). some time ago I gave mRemoteNG a look on Windows and it was pretty good (and also supports both VNC and RDP), but I haven't used it in forever
