*watches the four hour jenny nicholson star wars hotel video* oh, influencer culture is just executives realizing they can do springtime for hitler as a business strategy, isn't it

anyway its quite a good video. still kind of amazed that most of the amazing longform investigative journalism lately is coming from the enthusiast youtube scene, but i guess that's ALSO a symptom of something

as a former theatre-adjacent kid and reformed roleplayer, i TOTALLY get the CONCEPT being appealing, even if the execution is awful. i still wouldn’t pay what they were asking, but i would be tempted to check it out if it were reasonable

in reply to @margot's post:

on one hand yeah, but on the other, in general once you become Big like the surviving news organizations, you get higher scrutiny and less legal flexibility, so on some level it's always fell to citizen-journalists, they just had local news to report to before.

it’s probably a bit of that, but i think also most of the major orgs have just been wholly co-opted by the industries they cover. i’m sure a company like disney felt like they had a lock on it, not expecting that, this stuff still ends up getting out somewhere
