I don't know if they're still around, but we used to have separatists down here, who didn't think that we got enough from New York State to warrant the taxes. So you might have a fight on your hand after the severing but before the transfer...
long island becoming part of Denmark would be a very interesting outcome for the separatists, and it's arguably possible because greenland
Making the anti-tax folks pay a VAT for their trouble would definitely be poetic.
Oh, and yeah, they're still at it, after one and a quarter centuries... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Island_(proposed_state)
Dies laughing uncontrollably at the thought of anyone east of Utica and south of Albany complaining about not getting enough benefits from the NYS budget to justify the taxes.
they don't care about the benefits they just don't want to pay.
well. they'll care once the benefits go away but they'll blame it on something else then
Oh I know, it's funny to me because this is classic Republican mouthing off in the rural and poor parts of the state, where they don't understand how much worse off they would be if they got their independent state.
The depressed conditions and neglected infrastructure out here make it have the appearance of having a fig leaf of respectability as an idea, but in actuality the problems really aren't how much money is going out here, but what it's going to. (The money and tax breaks for the new Bills stadium being a classic example.)
That's the miracle of New York right there, everybody unified in the conviction that the legislature ignores them (but not anybody else) except as a source of tax revenue.
Bingo. It's one of those ridiculous things you hear all the time out here.
