sometimes it feels as if the role of corporate "IT help desk" has further caused the learned helplessness around computers, especially with how locked down corpo computers are. Especially among nontechnical positions (I get the reasoning but also like... people complain about Junior Engineers being clueless and forget there isn't much room to explore until you get the hang of the Installing Software Under Duress people-loop)

usually no one in the loop has spare time for that help to be pedagogical. So the same problem happens over and over and over, removing even more time than if it was taught.

it suddenly occurs to me that the accepted "metric" for successful call-center work, which is merely "fewest seconds per call", is tailor-made to encourage a cycle of non-solutions. People keep calling again and again about the same problems—i.e. "success" if you're a manager. ~Chara

Part of the reason popular open source software sometimes winds up good is because it has like 0-1 layers of intermediate people between the users and the programmers, so if the programmers aren't dickheads, they know what's wrong with their software. Enterpriseā„¢ software is Like That because there are never fewer than 5 layers of intermediate support personnel between users and programmers, so programmers hear "sounds good, let's ship it and hit our schedule goals" while end users hear "it doesn't work that way, and can't, and fuck you for even asking because I can't fix it and you are the hundredth person to ask"
