i know this is a spicy take but moderation on a platform with actively hostile forces isn't community building, [at least not equivalent return for the effort put in community building], it's stationkeeping.
it's important, but I think a lot of people miss what could be done with that skillset were they not forced to employ it by platforms just letting their worst most impactful parts lie on the shoulders of unpaid volunteers.
when i talk about it being an issue, I'm talking about opportunity cost, what else those people could be doing, not just the fact that they're unpaid for the job they are doing.
holding ground is important and sometimes all you can do, but I think it's important to realize that platform moderation and community moderation are two very different beasts and one is very disadvantaged towards it's goals by design
