this is a cool article, but now I'm wondering if you can spike trees with... wooden nails, and if they'd reject them like a transplant organ. Because if they don't...
tl;dr they're lignin-impregnated wooden nails that basically become a part of the wood they're shot into because the lignin matrix gets heated up and flows through them

it's the relative hardness compared to the rest of the wood. But generally spiking trees aims to mangle the larger equipment, not portable chainsaws
