I'm high enough that i forgot how to multiply (or successively add) in my head

so instead i, inexplicably¹ and automatically, as if I'd ever practiced this:

  • visualized² a square grid (x * y)
  • fermi estimate on the size of the grid
  • division to filter for correct answers.

excuse me what the fuck.

1. mental math is pretty hard for me, in part because my immediate-term-memory has faster decay than most people I know
2. it's uh. very hard to describe since I don't have a "mind's eye" in the normal sense. it's like speaking a language you barely know and learned only from Duolingo. that's just the normal state of it for me though.

This type of thing (if not the particular method described) was a regular experience for me in elementary school as a kid with chronic migraines forced to practice arithmetic and do word problems.
I also have the same problems you describe in the footnotes.
