so I have the type of ADHD where I constantly forget things if they aren't right in front of me, or in a pile on my desktop. taking that metaphor literally (pasted from obsidian):

(tidytabs positions and chrome window naming conventions for tidytabs: )

The Why:

  • Every 'topic' outside of main/misc gets it's own window
  • I don't close tabs. They're my 'research history'. They're saved windows in tabs outliner, so if I lose them, I can bring them back. Once I'm sure I'm done with them, I unload them permanently, but keep them saved either in TabsOutliner, or a TabsOutliner export
  • I have the kind of ADHD that basically lacks object permanence when it comes to important things, so instead I scatter it across my metaphorical desktop

Monitors:

  • 1920x1080 upper
  • 4k main
  • 1080x1920 right portrait

Naming:

Monitor Names:

  • m - main, the main central monitor
  • u - upper, the monitor above the central one
  • pm - portrait monitor

Horizontal Position Names:

  • l - left
  • r - right
  • vertical position
    • t - top
    • b - bottom

The Windows:

  • mlt-main - the main window, where my chat apps / reading / search exploration goes
  • mrt-misc - where youtube/netflix/music/reading/tabs-as-bookmarks often go
  • mlt-aux - when I don't want to be distracted by the tabs, I spin up a new window
  • mrt-reference - the writing portion of this has been replaced by Obsidian and soon probably org, but it's also where I keep my 'clipboard' of tabs -- things I need to reference for my current area of work/study
  • mlb-* - VSCode lives in this same windowtabs collection.
    • Anything I'm looking at that is to be read alongside the terminal (documentation, guides, etc) goes here. I generally won't be needing terminal reference while typing in VSCode, and mrb-* is where my terminal lives
    • what lives here at the moment: VScode, mlb-emacs and mlb-zsh
  • mrb-*
    • terminal lives here
    • current coding. Whatever I'm using for coding reference goes here, like the bokeh documentation or python references.
  • ul-* - random-access reference (requires shifting focus)
  • ur-* - videos or whatever, or long-running tests or other things I only need to glance at
  • pmt-chat - portrait monitor, top pane
    • contains all chat apps but discord and slack
    • telegram, signal, wire, keybase, google_chat, steam_friends, teamspeak, etc
  • pmm-discord - discord and slack
  • pmb-tabs - tabs outliner
