from what I've seen from reading too much of the past, it used to be that tech salaries were high partially (implicitly) so you're able to have enough to get to the next job, which enabled people to say "no, I feel strongly that this is so unethical that I will quit if forced to do it, and probably bring the team with me." and now that's basically impossible
