I was listening to this podcast and the thing that jumped out at me is that Squarespace (the people Google just sold Google Domains to, though i don't know that that's related) wants to make themselves a 'Web Platform with ML text and image generation, payment processing, CMS, etc all built in and proprietary, instead of being bolt-on.
This is, flat out, a threat to The 'Web, but you'll never catch me saying that very strongly without caveat because, to the average rando, the web as it stands might as well not exist.
self-hosting and, let's face it, managed-hosting solutions are sorely lacking for people who aren't technical. I know the common argument here is "so there should be community hosting" but like, I'm technical and to me that doesn't exist so clearly it's not a particularly workable solution, doubly so when the people who mention it talk about like, basement boxes with people who see backups as a chore in the subtext.
but something needs to, because otherwise the ground is going to be ceded even further as they discover new markets to shape the 'Web into.
