I find it really hard to read books/watch movies that can be described as "a love letter to New York". I like New York! It's a great city. Love to spend time there. But also, maybe try shutting up about it????

I guess this is a West Coast chip on my shoulder, but I grumble every time I have to read through some description of an author's quirky little favorite spot in the big apple. I'm sorry!!!!

It keeps doing this shit, and you know what? I hope New York City catches fire, falls over, and slides into the Atlantic

And the "crazy" is that they had a jello shot and wore glitter make up. Maybe said "penis" out loud

None of the things above are unique to New York, none are unique to big cities even?? The last one is just a hot dog stand???

"Only in New York!!" Picture of a normal dude going about their day - picture of a corner store bodega - picture of a rat eating garbage

What is it about New York that makes people forget about the concept of human settlements

as someone who lived on the west coast for a decade and now lives in new york… thank you.

every day i go to work on a subway line that’s permanently flooded with garbage water and my students who have never lived elsewhere in their lives parrot “best city in the world baybee” to me and i sigh

Funnily enough, here's a bit from the book I moved on to afterwards:

"Near the corner of Hollywood and Vine, where everything ends and a great many things begin, she turned into a private parking lot and left her car. I double-parked in the street till I saw her enter Swift’s, a gaudy figure walking like a slightly elated lady."
