crypto didn't work out so they're looking for the next goldrush, pretty sure that's about it
i'm pretty much constantly bummed about it as a person who "works in ML".
there's a lot of stuff in the field that should be genuinely exciting and useful and will likely make the world better! there's stuff like i work on which at the very least will make someone have a slightly nicer time on a website.
then there's the plagiarism factory that's eating everything and filling the internet with lies, kinda makes it hard to get excited for any of it
