Every December, our town holds the Firebird Festival, where they build a big wooden bird and set it on fire. There’s talk about the seasons and the symbolism of the phoenix, renewal and rebirth and life marching on in rolling patterns. There’s food and music and lots of neighbors — and it’s just nice to gather around a fire on a cold winter night. A big fire. The bird is 30 feet (10 meters) tall. Here are some photos:

These pics were taken over about 30 minutes — but the fire will go all night. (Our fire department is on hand to keep it under control.)

One thing I didn’t learn until today is that from September-December our local art center holds workshops where people make clay birds and then the whole lot of them (~150 of them, on average) get loaded into the big wooden bird. They get baked by the fire and then they’ll be retrieved from the ashes tomorrow morning! I want to see if we can make some birds next year.
