i think we're gonna re-do quick share on mobile. it has been a big pile of difficult to debug issues caused by every mobile browser doing things subtly different, even on the same platform, so i wanna make it less complicated for myself to maintain.

do any of y'all have strong feelings on how it should work? i am hesitant to add More Buttons (the whole reason it's like this in the first place) because we can't adequately label things and adding More just amplifies the problem.

EDIT: if your suggestion involves changing something about how the hold-and-slide interaction works, please know that I'm not using it. the entire problem is that hold-and-slide just straight up doesn't work consistently for no clear reason and i'm tired of fucking with it on three different phones simultaneously to try and make it work.

in reply to @jkap's post:

I like double tap to quick share. hard to activate accidentally, if you don't do it right (or the browser messes it up, even) it does a normal share and correcting it is just one more button press... I feel like those two considerations are important, at least. no clue how hard that is to implement though.

Personally I dislike mobile interactions that take the form "touch it in a particular way." Not discoverable, easy to activate by accident, hard to activate on purpose. (Maybe this means I'm old.)

I'd be fine with the reshare button just popping a menu with "Quick reshare" and "add comment." In fact I might prefer that on desktop as well.

I do consider this to be a solid alternative to a hidden interaction. Definitely add an arrow to make clear it's a menu, not a button, or even that it's a menu and a button, if you want to make one action primary and the other secondary.

what if on mobile, tapping the button pops up the little "quick share" label like it does now and you can either tap that label to quick share or tap the share button itself a second time to bring up the slow share screen. if you hit it and keep scrolling it would just disappear

absolutely! I like this idea the most. You don't need a new menu, but being able to bypass reply-shares simply would be lovely. (relatedly, it'd be nice to tooltip the shift+click as an option on web for those who've missed it)

two buttons is my preference, but a menu (like Twitter) would be fine

i think it should work this way on desktop too (but please keep the shift click shortcut)

alternatively a modal where you can either add something or just click again to share like Tumblr is fine, but I think it would discourage sharing without comment since it feels more involved. your call on of that is a good or bad thing.

Petition for the name "Blender Menu" for what pops up when you click the 🔄 button. Then you can write patch notes about putting meatballs in the blender.

clicking twice, maybe not fast double click tho, but without reloading the page on first click.

clicking once will have to have a delay before redirecting to new post - or new post could be made on the same page

otherwise, last option I'd say is two different buttons for resharing with and without comment

Here's an idea mostly for the sake of suggesting something radically different: Make quick share the default action on mobile, and add a little popup at the bottom of the screen or something that says like 'Post shared! [edit]` and make adding additional content require an extra action

I do like hold slide but it should copy tumblr for android entirely: long ish hold, then a circle of your pages appears, and you have to very deliberately drag into one of the pages' icons

Also simple suggestion for avoiding accidentals tho: disable the action on scroll, reenable after a second of no scroll

I'm in favor of either 2 buttons or a drop down with 2 options - for both mobile and desktop.

This would make quick share more useable on both platforms for keyboard, screen reader, and voice control users (assuming proper coding). Keeping the desktop shortcut is probably fine for people who use it, but shouldn't be the only way of doing it, imo. (Shift + enter does work, but there's no indication of the shortcut anywhere...)

Edit: disclaimer that these are my thoughts based on semi-amateur accessibility testing, and if user experience from disabled folks contradicts any of it, this should be superceded.

I'd prefer 2 buttons, but if not, I could probably get along with a longpress on the button causing a menu to pop up that offers "quick share" or "share with comment", and then I do a second tap on the choice I want.

I don’t know if this already exists and I just haven’t figured it out, but I really want a “back” button, so that when I’ve clicked through on someone’s post, I can then return to where I was. Right now I have to click the cohost button at the top and it takes me to the beginning, then I have to scroll down all over again.

Oh that must be the issue—I’m on iPhone and had the site saved to my Home Screen. Makes it a lot more convenient to access than in the browser, but I didn’t realize I was losing functionality that way! (Edited to add: in this mode I don’t have a back button)

a small popup menu à la twitter would be best i think. Actually it would be nice if that was the default behaviour for the share feature (having a floating popup instead of a separate compose page). That would help not loosing track of where you were on the page before sharing something

idk shit about design praxis but what i would most enjoy would be to tap it, a little menu with two widely spaced options comes up that says "quickshare" and "share post screen" or something, and i pick which one i want to do.

i am solely a mobile user fwiw!
