While at the grocery store today, after getting some creamer out of one of the refrigerated shelves, a woman who was obviously quite a bit shorter than me—and I'm not particularly tall—asked if I could get something off of the top shelf for her. Those shelves, at least, are within my reach, so no problem.

She then said she liked my mask, asked where I got it from. Like the overwhelming majority of people she was unmasked. I told her it was from Flo Mask (and spelling it out for her for clarity) and explained it's got the replaceable filter, the good rubber seal, and it's very comfortable to wear. She thanked me. A rather unusual encounter in 2024!

oh you look so cool and that mask fits so nicely with the outfit vibe. i have never seen these before. prev comment mentions it's easy to understand people wearing these... i speak very softly and people keep getting angry at me and telling me to remove my mask because they don't understand me. these masks sound good if i can get one here. and so pretty. thank you for sharing

it's really good to hear about interactions like this. i've had some surprisingly pleasant ones too recently, including after a con where i gently said my bit in a discord channel where people were reporting on getting sick afterwards, and everyone in the conversation was receptive and thanked me for making the point. at the same event the friend i went with masked up because i was, and did a great job negotiating with their young kid over doing the same. and after i mentioned at work recently that i wished masking was still encouraged at in-person events, a non-disabled colleague turned up at our next team day in an n95. this is all still against the general grain of course, but seeing people improve their efforts or come back around is very heartening.
