pretty much exactly how I do it except I just use one layer and a low-opacity brush. It's the only way I can get sketches done quickly- if I use lines I always get caught up in making everything look way nicer than it has to be
That's another good way of making sure you don't get lost in the sauce, though I can't use low opacity brushes anymore; I always instinctively press harder which wears out my hand.
Another great thing about it is that you get to instantly check your proportions as you draw, which is huge.
