run-based roguelike - you're in a world of cyclical doomed pilgrimages where everyone sacrifices themselves at the end each time. As long as you adhere unquestioningly to the rites of the pilgrimage, winning runs and getting meta-progression currency is nearly effortless, but attempting to explore outside of those highly-proscribed bounds for a better way puts the journey at risk, and if a pilgrimage fails the world undergoes a period of ruin that randomly destroys upgrades and game progression you've unlocked

Nintendo's attitude towards continuity is very clearly like my attitude towards a charcuterie board; you take the bits you find interesting and leave the rest where it is. That's fine! I don't think continuity is a necessary ingredient in anything! But their recent insistence that there's a "timeline" that's real and definitely exists and isn't just an excuse to sell books to fans is so transparent I kind of can't believe they keep announcing things like this with a straight face
