Despite title this is about everything I watched at Evo over the weekend. I wasn't there but I sure dug myself into a hole and sat in front of a fan and watched fighting games all weekend. I did actually bring up the whole "they definitely flash-carted the 3S tournament" thing as it was impossible to ignore. This is mostly about Hayao's performance, including a full breakdown of the sequence everybody is raving about. The second half is misc notes about various other games I watched. It's about 2000+ words so if you've been waiting to hear from me I hope this helps!!

wrt the note about LCD lag - I'm curious, have tournaments started moving towards OLEDs or other newer TV tech with lower lag? At this point OLEDs with the lowest lag mode setting have about as little lag as a CRT.

The only thing that I've personally seen win people over to "yeah this is acceptable" for an old game (short of a real CRT setup) has been a Mister FPGA plugged into a low-lag gamer monitor.

For post-HD games, players accept 4f lag because it's about as good as you're getting on console, and for various reasons (like Sony owning Evo) you're going to be playing tournaments mostly on console even if your personal rig is much better. I suspect the issue with getting a lot of oled monitors would just be price: not so much for evo but for the larger scene. On an organizational level, a consistent format beats superior performance.
