every discussion of how you use your vote, being compelled to vote, voting for "the lesser of two evils" is a worthwhile conversation to have. but all of it exists underneath a larger question, one to which the answer seems obvious to me.

some groundwork, first:

  • are there people who would very much like to vote but can't? yes. would those people go through months if not years of their lives to get the right to vote, or get it back? yes.

  • do i have friends who can't vote? yes. if i could choose to, would i cast a vote for a friend who otherwise is unable to? absolutely.

so i cannot just ignore the privilege i have to put another vote out there, for the people who cannot. for every queer person thinking "my vote doesn't matter, its just one guy who hates me versus one who can't stand me", there's another queer person in prison. their life is already terrible, how can i sit here and tell them "life sucks no matter who is in charge?"

if you can't bring yourself to vote, bring someone else's memory. do it as you think of the person who would be voting if they could.

in reply to @Sheri's post:

my friends who cannot vote due to either death or having faced incarceration (would) want me to not vote as they do not support the project & illegitimate state we live under to continue to exist, nor for me/others to validate the violence that form of governance deals to millions of its own residents, and billions worldwide every year.

i make no comment or accusations with regards to your stance here or your choices, as youre entitled to make them. i think it is deeply inconsiderate however, to misappropriate the framework of "privilege" (something which really doesnt work well outside of its intended context of analyzing antiblackness & even then is not a framework that can cover all aspects of ones analysis) to imply those who stand beside the victims of the machine that is the united states, often victims in themselves in less severe ways, are on a high horse we need to get off of.

most people choosing to not vote, who reject the state in its entirety, are not larping or flaunting disregard for political reality. we understand the consequences. factually the research shows an americans vote is materially meaningless and has little to no impact in what happens in our government. that sucks. but its just true. most people committing to refuse to validate the democratic party's role in these problems are both answering a call related to an ongoing genocide in about the only way we easily can, and/or are a part of the very groups you claim to be "voting for" here.

i am sorry, but a vote for the democrats is still a vote for the system that causes these problems in the first place. please dont encourage people down this path

To anyone reading this reply and considering giving into "I won't vote" apathy:

don't make this mistake!

I urge you not to give in to apathy because the fascists want you to give up without a fight. They would prefer that you do like this above and just give up. Fascists are cowards and are weaker than they appear but we HAVE to defeat them. The fascists are NOT telling their own to 'not vote'. They are telling their people that "every votes counts" because they know their only legitimate path to power is winning on anti-majoritarian flukes and technicalities like 2016 and their days are numbered. I cannot stress this enough: **Defeating the enemy requires defeating them on every front, including and especially voting. **

Voting for the lesser of two evils sucks but it is absolutely necessary to prevent further harm to the people we love, the country, and the world especially now. It's certainly not a revolutionary act, but voting is the avenue of harm reduction that the largest collective amount of Americans share and respect. Don't leave the tool on the table. Vote in solidarity with the women and AFAB who were activated when Trump's Supreme Court took a way their right to live. Vote in solidarity with trans people who are being killed by more bigots every day. Vote AND protest genocide and imperialism. Vote AND provide mutual aid. Vote AND push for a better world, please.

this is not apathy. this is not flippancy. i have thought about this a lot, especially recently. i have three posts i will link to expand on this, the most recent of which i just posted and will copy and paste in full. i highly recommend you read the other two as well:

  1. written after reading this specific post and commenting on it: https://cohost.org/vin/post/6952506-oppressed-population
  2. expanding on concerns voiced in response to the above post: https://cohost.org/vin/post/6974254-this-was-a-portion
  3. quoted below: https://cohost.org/vin/post/6974276-i-have-felt-disturbe

"i have felt disturbed and destabilized especially in the past several weeks watching a huge portion of the people ive known for years, who have never as long as ive known them, fallen into this kind of behavior or analysis, almost overnight explode into doing so. i am deeply torn and uncertain of what to do about this, as it at times overwhelms me to feel like my choice is between sticking to my principles and what i view as standing up for my friends from the backgrounds these stances inherently determine are disposable to those who promote it in the interest of their own (in my opinion, illusionary) 'safety' & self preservation. i also know criticism of this could resemble or potentially activate a sense of threat, imply perhaps i wish to cancel or dispose of people (i do not, and will not), or reinforce power structures and dynamics relevant to my position in the world & society & the positions of the majority of my friends / mutuals. i am primarily speaking of twitter here when i say this as i am not a regular user of any other social media, but still.

i have made the choice to stand by my principles regardless of the outcome of doing so, while attempting to do so compassionately, as i do not believe punitive or moralistic responses to fear ever help or encourage people to work through those difficulties. there is a strong chance this will damage trust or friendship between myself and a lot of people i know. that is painful and sad for me, but not as painful as it would feel to my friends i would fail by conceding to these developments towards reactionary stances. that number of friends is much smaller than the former, but so be it. i do not feel compelled to prioritize my social life more than this. if you are a stranger to me though, i do not by default intend to tolerate being told i am a fascist or a nazi collaborator for being a communist and sticking to that specific framework of analysis for both personal and political reasons.

one of the original targets of these ideologies, these genocides-politicides, have often been communists (under which anarchists often fall as well if unnamed), or populations branded as communists to justify a lack of opposition to their persecution. the american-western powers axis (and allies) have crafted the 'liberal democracy' as we know it as a fundamentally anti-communist approach to governance. this has been explicitly laid out as intentional in US law ever since the korean war. it has been the initial point in the justification of so much mass death, so many wars, so much intervention, coups, obfuscated vassalization. perhaps you think the problem is itself "power", the concept, the abstraction those who have any impact on form and function of day to day life supposedly possess. i do not agree, though i think criticisms of power hold their value in our considerations. i do not demand nor expect people to speak the same language of the framework i speak, though im happy to explain & translate it as best i can. i ask that you not determine what every imperialist nation has concluded is one of the biggest threats to the way of life for (some, predominantly white-as-legal-status) western citizens (not all residents) & their own interests is what collaborates with said nations & their projects. nothing is immune to these issues, but historically, overwhelmingly, that has not been the case in most instances."

fun fact! a vote for the democrats is just a vote for joe biden to be elected instead of trump, which is the optimal outcome of the election. your vote influences that one very important thing, and literally nothing else.

it's actually really simple, you fill out the ballot with a vote for joe biden (or whoever the democratic candidate is), and that makes trump less likely to win the election, because the candidate who gets more votes (especially in swing states) is the guy who becomes president. it's completely confidential and you don't have to be a democrat to do it. you don't have to give money to the democratic party, or voice your support for the democratic party, or any of that while doing it either. you can just cast a vote for the democratic candidate without supporting the democratic party. you can even be a full on, outspoken fascist and still vote for the democratic candidate!

good news! the outcome of the electoral college is also something which is influenced by you voting for the democratic candidate. that's why i said "especially in swing states" :3

if that was the only thing you were worried about, i'm glad i could clear that up for you!

clearly that is not my point or sticking issue, and your response implies you believe that the american state functions the way it claims it does, & u believe the american narrative to some extent. i do not, neither do my friends i trust the most. i cant expect you to be identical to me, but youre welcome to read what ive written at length and linked to as well to understand my analysis. i hope you consider it, ty
