not sure i quite got it down here, but i remember having orange/brown gradients in it that were very good
might try doing poked faces (X subdivision instead of /) to see about getting less directional biasing, but I don't want to let things get too dense/complex, since I'm still trying to go for a more retro approach at the end of the day.
tried adding a secondary inverse flare pass with some crude chromatic abberation, again all performed in the vertex shader for the plane that draws over the screen near the end of the queue
