FUCK YEAH this is really, really great news from Japan, I'm so glad that things proceeded smoothly and in the right direction, the one where trans rights in Japan take a massive step forwards. I'm really happy for everyone over there, this must be such a weight off their shoulders. I hope things continue improving with public perception and acceptance in the coming years.

Unfortunately that policy is not unique to Japan. Most of Europe had sterilization requirements for legal gender changes, too, that only started to be taken down in the last decade. And it's still a requirement in much of the US, if you can even change your legal gender in your state at all.
to add a little detail that gets glossed over in headlines, the court struck down the sterilization requirements but not the compulsory bottom surgery, which is one of the major reasons the anonymous plaintiff brought her case in the first place. she's now been sent back down to a lower court who will rule on that.
yeah shame that one's still a necessity. though I'm happy about the sterlization no longer being required trans rights in japan still has a long ways to go.
