A well and truly fucked trend we’ve noticed lately is that the usual, ugly attempt to justify layoffs is now targeted at the “players” themselves: explaining why the layoffs are necessary, how it will affect their audience (as if that’s the most important part of this), and doubling down on their slavish commitment to appeasing fans. Not only is it achingly insincere: it always reads like it’s penned by the company’s PR division, treating layoffs as just another part of the press cycle. Truly, the only question we have whenever another awful layoff is announced is “Will the CEO step down or get fired, too?” And what do you know, the answer’s always no!
