In commissioning a video game adaptation for one of 2003’s biggest flop films, no expense was spared, and only the finest names in the software business were brought on to bring the product to fruition. This is to say, Activision immediately delegated the game to their ‘Activision Value’ label, and tasked Anivision to develop it -- a studio known only for a single previous title in a barely-supported online racing game (Indy Net Race Live). The result is a first-person shooter so dangerously close to being categorized as “unplayable,” it is frankly incredible that it was even allowed to release in the first place.

Seeming to largely ignore the proceedings of its film basis, Gods and Generals instead presents generic Civil War simulation at some of its absolute most baffling and busted. In example: Every musket is only capable of firing a single shot before being immediately discarded, thus leading to the game having to provide literal piles of rifles for you to pick up every time you're expected to fight more than a single enemy. Developer Anivision had briefly entertained the concept of charging an additional five dollars for access to a multiplayer mode, which unsurprisingly never materialized after the game was met with unanimously negative reception; including its being a recipient of one of GameSpot's 'Don't Play This Game' video reviews.
