I really do hope a 4 person social media business with over a hundred thousand users and hundreds to thousands of paying customers can pay a living wage in the long run. That's basically the thesis of the ASSC manifesto.
Needing to scale to multiple millions of users just to pay 4 people without relying on VC money and monetization would not be my preferred outcome of this experiment.
I would argue MetaFilter still going is a data point in favor of that (although it is a more centralized community by design and it has had rough patches)
