there’s a post by max1461 about how they think most sciences can be conceived of as adding “base sciences” (e.g. philology + math = linguistics) and i was wondering if you could do something similar for art. like, thinking about it, i’d probably break it down into the five senses + language + dynamism + interactivity + body involvement. the tricky thing is that there are dependencies. like, you can’t communicate language without relying on your senses.

anyways if anyone can find that aforementioned post let me know

edit: misremembered, it wasn’t specifically “sciences”, more so general fields/concepts (e.g. organization)

i usually treat philology as a footnote. a historical precursor to modern linguistics that mixed in some anthropology, history, comparative religion, and archaeology.

one of the big shifts from philology to linguistics, in practice, is that it became significantly less eurocentric. philology was a product of a kind of thinking that framed ancient peoples of europe and the near east as being more inherently wise, valuable, and worthy of study than any other languages.

philologists tended to dismiss languages not spoken by europeans as being weird, chaotic, and lacking in underlying order. the realization by anthropologists that other languages simply had different kinds of grammar, rather than lacking grammar, really laid the groundwork for a lot of the focus of modern ling.

I tried looking for it and found an excerpt of the post but not a link to the post itself for unknown search engine reasons. the excerpt is this:

Linguistics is philology + math, econ is social commentary + math, law is organization + storytelling, most sciences are engineering + organization + math.

so it seems i misremembered it as “base sciences” when it’s really something more nebulous than that
