I worked a five hour shift on Monday and despite having to drive 30 minutes to that store in a bad part of town and the store being humid and nasty all day, I somehow left with some energy left, like I didn't feel as though my entire soul had been drained. Wild.
We used to hunt and gather, for days on end, to make ends meet.
and we used to farm for sustenance, from sunrise to sunset, to make ends meet.
we exist in a time where we can determine how these things happen -- There's lots of jobs that allow for split shifts, or larger breaks, or two partial shifts a day.
there'll always be something that needs to be done, to ensure you got what you need to keep moving, but, you have more options now than people used to have for quite a while -- just have to keep looking for them.
I believe for most of human history the average working day was in the vicinity 4-6 hours. Hunter-gatherers do a lot of sitting around and chilling!
