Via Retr0id:
MAIM, a DAW plugin which applies MP3 compression in realtime (free, open source)

MAIM is an audio plugin that circuit bends an MP3 encoder in real time, disrupting the control flow sending data down unexpected paths to create digital distortions. With heavily hacked real MP3 encoders at its core, MAIM gives you the full gamut of digital distortion, from the realistic to the fantastical.

in reply to @strangebroadcasts's post:

It is based on JUCE, it embeds the source for LAME and BLADE, and it doesn't appear to depend on anything 64-bit only, so 32-bit builds should just be a matter of following the build instructions but on a 32-bit (virtual) machine

The slightly less convenient part is VST2, since Steinberg stopped distributing the VST 2.4 SDK and really does not want people to make plugins with it if they weren't already -- JUCE does still support it, but you have to provide the SDK yourself AFAICT.

So a 32-bit VST2 should be possible, but it can't really be distributed by the plugin authors themselves -- does your DAW/tracker support other plugin formats?

Oh, I know what the problem is - I compiled it in debug mode, so it expects the debug versions of the C++ runtime libraries as well

Installing Visual Studio Community with C++ should fix it but that's slightly onerous, I will try to compile a proper release version tomorrow

OMG thank you so much!!

this plugin is like so much better than i expected for wacky sound design stuff. i wanted to explore sounds like these for a while now without having to export everything in audacity manually or something like that. being able to mess with the controls is a real game changer tbh.
