daily knowledge: the original Fallout is often said to be the spiritual successor to an earlier post-apocalyptic RPG developed by Interplay and published by EA known as Wasteland. the game was not originally intended to be a sequel, but the CEO of Interplay, Brian Fargo, attempted to secure the rights to the Wasteland IP so the game could become one. this fell through because, as the creator of Fallout, Tim Cain, stated on his youtube channel, the EA executive leading these talks never intended to license the IP, and simply lead them along because they hated Interplay and thought it was funny.
