There's nothing wrong with starting a story in medias res but the way a lot of them do it feels tedious. A lot will just throw you in an action scene from the middle in the story with no context and then stop the action dead in its tracks to rewind and go where the story actually begins. And I dunno. That just feels bad to me? Just start at the start then!!! It would be one thing if they showed you specific events to mislead you about the story and then recontextualize them but that's not what most do. They just start in the middle of an action scene because I guess they're afraid the audience will get bored otherwise or something. First of all I think it's fine to start slow. But also if you think your opener is boring, that's not something starting in medias res will solve!!! If anything it exacerbates it.

FFVII does it best imo because they start in medias res and they keep going. Everything you need to know about the setting and characters is told to you throught the action segment and afterwards when things wind down.
