No, the industry doesn't misunderstand what "indie" is. Dave the diver didn't get labelled as indie by geoff dorito's awardvertisement show because the organizers were confused about what it means. The big companies are simply seeing where the popularity wind is blowing and they want to appropriate it for themselves. The music industry has been doing that shit for even longer.
