i don't understand the appeal of hyper-realistic AAA games, like i remember back in ps3 days being impressed by prerendered cutscenes like "wow games look like real life now!!!" but i don't really enjoy playing games that look like that. i'm tryin to escape reality here, stop reminding me of it...

also probably the result of being a jaded adult who looks at a game and goes "oh, so many people must have crunched to make this real and were paid pennies relative to the profits these games bring in." it just makes me sad. AAA games make me feel sad and empty. indie/doujin games are where it's at, i love to look at something that's so clearly like, "this could only have been drawn by this specific person" it just fucking rules. love to look at art and see the artist in it.

Big music productions feels pretty much the same to me. The technical folks and the studio musicians are often paid squat and all their musicality seems to be sacrificed in favor of whatever the boardroom thinks will sell.

Find a good indie though…man… It’s not just that they are playing songs in a way no one else would, but they often sound very individual too because they all have different ways of mixing. I much prefer it to the big pop labels :)

yeah... it also feels so pointless, once you know about mocap and all that stuff. they're spending So much money just to replicate real life because for some reason live action video games aren't really a thing. and they're usually not even doing it because they want to create something that would never exist in real life, because the mere fact of that thing existing in the game would make it not realistic. there's probably something you can extrapolate about society at large from that.

i'm pretty sure every single game that i've admired for its art style is all pixel art, if that says anything about me (what it says is that I like squares)

it makes me feel so tired!!!!!! i prefer pixels and sprite art to 3d too, even heavily stylized 3d, i just really love when i can look at art and know someone DREW it yknow? 3d is still obviously made by people but it feels so abstracted by comparison... just draw me a picture, i wanna see your cool pictures!!

yeah it feels like a lot of games “default” to being in realistic 3d instead of it being a choice made intentionally (and that’s probably not even true, but it’s not good if it doesn’t even feel like it was for any reason…), and of course this bothers me more because it’s a style i don’t particularly like. like for alan wake, i at least understand that it’s referencing a specific visual style of live action tv/movies, so that doesn’t bother me as much (but it’s still not my preference!). even 3d i want to feel like it being in 3d is “justified” in some way (being able to reuse animations to save money/time is totally fair, i respect that. or of course that the gameplay simply wouldn’t work in 2d, like monster hunter or something) because i would love every game to be 2d illustrated if possible lol

this made me realize that out of my favorite games of all time there's like 2 games that go for a realistic style and the only one that actually looks nice is yakuza 0 and even then that game is anything but realistic in terms of tone... I'm very happy about this, weirdly enough.
