Vixen. Genie. Vixdjinn!

Hi! I'm Phorm, and I'm a Vixdjinn!

A Friendly Vixdjinn Says Hello!

I'm a genie girl, who really likes being a genie, and really likes everything about genies (really)! I'm a bit confused, lost, and trying to find my way, but I always enjoy interacting with folks here. (Trans🏳️‍⚧️, occasionally NSFW, Be 18+ or please be gone.)

Yesterday night, just before I was heading to bed, I closed the browser that I was using to watch a Twitch stream and suddenly found that I had no Desktop.

No Start Menu. No control of anything.

Just the image you see above. A full screen hijack of my computer that effectively amounts to Microsoft saying "This computer sucks and you better go buy a Surface Tablet, because we're dropping support for you".

I hadn't run Windows update. I hadn't installed anything. In fact, all I had done since powering on the computer last evening was navigate to a Twitch stream and watch it.

So this... thing downloaded and installed itself silently and without my permission.

Notice there's no way to close it other than "Sling Ads At Me Now" or "Sling Ads At Me Later". If I had been thinking more closely, I would've swapped to Process Explorer and figured out the source executable for this bullshit, but in the moment I was just panicked.

Because this isn't a PSA. This isn't information. This is a scare-tactic, and one that's barely differentiated from malware. This is scummy, low, and Microsoft should be ashamed (they never will be, though).

I fucking hate this bull crap!!!

This is what I was grappling with before making the leap. As I've said in a lot of posts over the last 48hours it's not an easy jump and I can't blame you for being on Windows still... but I do pity you for bs like this

Ah gosh I'm glad to hear. I honestly feel like I'm just talking out my ass most of the time and having to second guess everything I'm writing.

But computing is a genuine hobby for me gosh darn it and I am very passionate about things being better for everyone!

Yup, I got this yesterday night as well. It didn't replace my desktop though. I closed a browser window that was taking up half of my screen and left the one that covered the other half of my screen open and THIS popped up OVER that browser as well. I wonder how often the "remind me later" is going to proc and if it will pop up more often as discontinuation day gets closer?

I so badly want to find microsoft's petard and do whatever I can to help hoist them on it >:(
