It's been a while! The Spotter Veteran is our first true Support Veteran, one of those Kriegers you really don't want to see die in the first half of the game. I decided to hit the voxcaster with contrast paints for the buttons and knobs and it worked out pretty well. Notes on the model as ever below the cut.
The spotter veteran, like the gunners before them, is not nearly as important as the equipment they carry. The voxcaster (the metal contraption strapped to their back) provides a link to an off-map mortar team, allowing the spotter vet to direct barrages that ignore most cover to anyone they can see. The mortars hit on 5+, but it hits all hostiles within 2" of the target and can be fired when in concealment, so unless some furious Kommando is in knife range it's better than a lasgun.
The binoculars represent a different ability - in exchange for 2AP (their whole activation), the spotter can pick a single visible hostile that's in concealment, and allow a single other veteran within 2" to treat that hostile as if it's in engagement. The chosen unit can then activate immediately afterward, denying the enemy a chance to reposition. While the obvious solution is to pair the spotter with the sniper veteran, you could also run them up to the plasma gunner for a terrifying reprise in the likely case your sniper gets counter-sniped.
As an aside, I want to point out the sculpt on the voxcaster, because it's got some good greebles, and I love a good greeble. As far as I can tell the word came from Industrial Light & Magic, and describes any small detail added to a model. It's the suggestion of function - I don't know what the blue or yellow buttons do. The sliding knob on the right of the device could increase the volume of a given call or order pizza for all I know, but I love that I could believe the veteran holding the voxcaster does know what all those buttons do. Piping, stenciled logos, wiring, tubes, etc. all do much the same with terrain, and I love it - even an abandoned industrial killzone looks homey with enough attention to detail.
