A traditional take on the Death Korps - French-style greatcoats and flat black lasguns. Rambling about the Death Korps under the cut, but I'll say this now - painting the lenses of those masks has been A Challenge.

The Death Korps cut a tragic figure - indoctrinated by a culture eaten whole by the Cult Imperialis, these soldiers know nothing but war and hope for nothing but death. The Mordians have their pride, the Catachans their bravado, even the Valhallans have a certain joie de vivre - the Kriegers have only the worst case of Catholic Guilt this side of Rome.

In Kill Team, these four poor creatures epitomize the Krieger ideal of the soldier as resource - they have only their lasguns, their bayonets, and 7 wounds each. To those of you unfamiliar with Kill Team, this means they only have a chance in single combat against the famously noodle-limbed Tau, and even then only in CQC. A single Ork could easily kill a pair of Guardsmen at knife-range, and any focused fire will liquefy them. It would take the four of them working in concert to kill a single Space Marine under absolutely ideal conditions. They are so sad that you can swap them out for Two (2) airstrikes. Munitions are more valuable than their whole lives.

Their weapons are weak, their defenses are pathetic, and they have no special abilities beyond their facility in taking orders. Their purpose is to give cover fire and sacrifice themselves so the specialists can do their jobs. If two of these pawns die so a plasma gunner can land a solid shot on a heretic Space Marine or xeno commander, it would be well worth it.

Perhaps that's why I'm so attached to the Kriegers - some part of me wants to see a Krieger bewildered at the fact that there is no more war, that their penance is over, that they can live - and in that victory they might find the peace their own people denied them. I don't think they would ever heal, not completely - but they might try. They might even find happiness.

But I digress - these soldiers will find neither peace nor happiness on the battlefield. They need to distract that Kelermorph so the sniper can get a solid bead on that rubber-headed xeno.
