The Zealot Veteran is finished (aside from the base, which I will get to, I swear), and I learned just enough brush control to add abstracted text to their copy of "The Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer". Per usual, notes on the unit and thoughts about their place under the cut.

Another in the Expendable line of Veteran Guardsmen, the Zealot is marked out by their tendency to preach to their comrades while taking fire. The Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer is treated by the majority of the Guard as gallows comedy at best and toilet paper when convenient, but the catechisms within give the Zealot the ability to inspire their comrades. Granted, the inspiration does very little - dice that land on 5 or 6 in combat become critical hits rather than just 6 - but if it's a gunner you're inspiring it just might make a difference. The Zealot is also a hair more durable than the average guardsman - they get full re-rolls when defending against ranged attack. Their faith won't blunt a sword, though, so keep them back with the gunnery crew.

The Uplifting Primer they carry was written with the morale of the guardsmen in mind first, and as an actual guidebook second. The regulations in the primer brutally restrict the personal freedoms of the enlisted, while sanitized and infantilized descriptions of alien species hide the deadly nature of their foes. There is no actionable information about enemy weapons and tactics, but there are plenty of hymns and catechisms offered in earnest for soldiers to chant when they want to improve their aim, fortify their strength, and placate the Machine Spirits of their equipment.

That the Zealot Veteran takes it seriously makes them more than a little unnerving.
