It is true that the use of swords in medieval and early modern Europe was a sophisticated practice that incorporated both a number of complex martial arts and layer upon layer of class, ritual, and social signaling.

But it is also true that mostly they spent 200-300 years making the swords progressively longer and longer until people were walking around with 1.2m long metal spears and using them in bar fights
