If I listed every single one of my OCs in the box, I would not know peace. I basically just put the relevant/main ones I draw (Vaun shouldn't be there, but he's part of PI. Jaylin I'd like to draw more of, I just Have Not etc)
Anyway, Karyn's dead. Don't worry about it.
...Is where I was originally gonna leave this ask, but sure I'll shoot. Since I marked this post as sfw, here's a warning that most pics linked are nsfw!
Karyn Maviis was a well-known alchemist who was an evoker/indulim (basically a 'human' with a monster) who was in love with her Summon. She and her indrae husband, Marc, had an interest in providing indrae, who can't use magic, a means of defense against magic-wielding tchurae and monsterkind. Karyn's innovations led to the use of 'combative' potions, which are basically like. Explosives in a bottle (known as combustibles), ailments etc. Ririn is very good at poisons and combustibles for this reason; a lot of her early brew making knowledge came from her mother's notes... Which is how she eventually found out she was some sort of experiment, as mentioned on her ref
Karyn was pretty obsessed with 'arming' indrae, thus the reason behind said experiment on her own daughter. Well, daughters. The first result of this experimentation ended in the birth of Amya (who I still have yet to redesign- some of you might remember her as Daya), who was very visibly monsterborn. Marc, angry with the birth of what was clearly her Summon's daughter, forced her to put the child up for adoption. Clearly, she could have refused, but not only did she really need Marc's funding for her potionmaking work, her chemistry with him was also necessary for her plans. She couldn't risk a divorce, at least at the time.
Karyn felt strongly enough about indrae and, in turn, her children's safety that she had Ririn attacked as a child. This both taught her the dangers of the world, but it was mostly done with the intent of damaging her eye so to replace it with something akin to a catalyst for her dormant dark magic, as she wasn't developing the ability to express despite hitting puberty. As a catalyst that needed 'charging' from Karyn or Bertram (her Summon)'s magic, it had limited use. Karyn worked to figure out how to 'charge' said eye/Ririn's core in other ways that seemingly failed. One notably successful but very desperate method was feeding Ririn an Arna seed, which is a Rogulim core (which, I feel I should note, is really very dangerous for regular ass rae to consume. like, blood poison type dangerous), basically a big nasty piece of fleshy, still throbbing monster heart :) Unfortunately for Ririn, Arna seeds are integral to making extremely high grade potions, which she goes on to make as a Hunter. Considering her trauma with being force fed the stuff, so much as seeing one makes her intensely nauseous.
Before Karyn died (and after getting Marc locked up by convincing him to sell recreational brews to high schoolers), she went on to do research in monster/rae breeding, as there was once very little information on how it worked, not to mention the belief that someone who was stained could no longer bare children from other rae. This is almost true; it's quite a bit difficult, but part of Karyn's research was to prove that you could still have, at the very least, rae-ish children as someone who's stained. Ririn is proof of this (as implied here), even though she's got some monster in her genes thanks to a bit of Bertram being in the mix. Karyn's studies gaining traction are part of why children like Ena exists. While she is very much a monsterborn, she's still Annie and Silv (and Maelstrom)'s child, despite Annie being stained.
For fun, here's an AU design of Ririn if Karyn would have failed twice in making a rae-passing child. It also shows off her expression, albeit far more powerful than what canon Ririn's is without well, drug-induced aid. That's a story for another time though.
