"this visual novel benefits from a second playthrough" is coded language for "the plot isn't hot dog water and has an actual theme"
It's most a component of being structured in a series of having "a-ha!" moments in discovery of the story or puzzle clues/solutions. It "only works once" because you can't have that a-ha moment again due to already knowing it. I don't think it's bad presentation so much as just the nature of how that type of mystery play works. The whole "you can never play it again" thing is mostly hyperbole I think. It has been for me at least kljdlfkf. God knows I've gotten plenty from revisiting Outer Wilds myself
Yeah, stuff like Obra Dinn isn't poorly presented because it's a Deduction Mystery, it's just that unfortunately, Deduction Mysteries by their very nature don't work twice.
