i actually, sincerely believe that humanity will stick around for at least the next ten thousand years. i think it'll look very different then from how it looks now, and there will be several dozen moments of near-total collapse along the way, but people are uncannily good at continuing on even in the bleakest circumstances. and ten thousand years from now, there will be people who look back upon us with amazement at how similar we were to them.

It's nice to hear someone else echo my belief that...while all of this is at risk, and worth fighting for every inch to both preserve and advance the causes of life on earth...hope will still exist should we fail, and the earth, as both our home and our tomb, need not be anxious to receive us into its embrace ere long.

I think we'll even find homes on other planets before we're gone, whether by extinction or evolution.
It's sure as hell not happening via capitalism generally, let alone the fundamentally wrong-headed efforts of aspiring industrialist-kings, but I think we'll last at least long enough to, if nothing else, give expanding beyond Earth a serious try.
