@staff

winter break is almost upon us. cohost staff will be out of the office from Saturday, December 24 through Monday, January 2. We will be back in the office on Tuesday, January 3. During this time we will still around for moderation (we have a schedule!) and in case the site explodes, but otherwise we’re off work! Don’t fuckin bother us! It’s winter break! Q4 has been bonkers and we all need it!

speaking of january 3: we’re thrilled to say that our hiring process has been completed, and @kaara will be joining the team! as you may have guessed from context clues, january 3 is her first day. while we obviously don’t expect her to be fully ramped up immediately, we’re excited that our support processes are finally about to become under control, and we’re excited about the experience that she’s bringing to the team now and going forward.

here’s what’s new this week:

  • the activation queue is now empty!
    • if you signed up before yesterday and you’re still not activated, you likely haven’t verified your email address. we also launched a change today to make it obvious when this is the case, as well as adding a button to re-send the verification email. sorry for the confusion here!
    • we also launched a change indicating when your email verification was cancelled by clicking the “I didn’t sign up for cohost” link in the initial sign-up e-mail. this is something that people were accidentally doing fairly often, so we’ve also redesigned the email to try and prevent that.
  • announced and launched the Cohost Unverified™️ program!
  • you can now set your posts to only be visible when logged in!
    • check the gear icon on your profile!
    • also fixed a couple of bugs related to this feature where all-ages posts with content warnings were being given incorrect or broken clickthroughs.
      • we’re also doing some work internally to make sure our testing around these edge cases is more thorough so we don’t ship bugs like these again.
  • launched atom and JSON feed support!

  • we now have a dedicated security email
    • emails sent here are given high priority and notify us separately so we don’t accidentally miss anything.
      • this shouldn’t need to be said but, if you send normal support messages to this email to try and get us to see them faster, we will not be happy. don’t be an asshole.
    • we’re also serving .well-known/security.txt for easy reference
      • if you don’t know what this means, don’t worry about it.
  • beefed up our ability to keep AI art dataset scrapers off the site: added the X-Robots-Tag headers, in addition to meta tags, and blocked certain useragents
    • again, if you don’t know what this means, don’t worry about it
  • fixed a bug where deleted pages could crash your notification feed

here’s what’s coming up on cohost:

  • winter break
    • don’t @ me i’m on break
  • tag silencing is very close to being finished and might ship by the end of the week, but we can’t make guarantees

thanks for using cohost, and see y’all in 2023! :eggbug:

in reply to @staff's post:

Thank you for the visibility option! Will it also prevent people from potentially adding invisible pages to their rss feeds?

And thank you for all your hard work, hope you'll have a nice rest during the holidays!

Very disappointed to learn that

"you can now set your posts to only be visible when logged in!"

didn't mean that my posts would only be visible to others when I was actively on the website. No idea what the use case for that would be, but it sounded neat!
