It's rare for me to watch two films in a day, so I had to make a post and share my cinephile evening.

This was lovely!... until a certain point. As a romance writer and audience member, there are a few events that can sour a character or a whole story to me. Here, the former happened. This personal note aside, the plot felt a bit rough as well. I'd have cut a few scenes and developed others some more.

Bonus points for ace/aro representation.

Evil Dead Rise

I can't say I'm a fan of the Evil Dead franchise, but I've watched the first two, and I liked the whole gory, absurdist tone. Ash was also a captivating character. But this new film... I don't know. It has the same tone - full of glaringly fake blood, deaths and mutilations so absurd they're funny rather than scary, and some actually intense moments -, but for me, it came across as... generic. The claustrophobic setting worked well, but the characters came across as basically the same as other characters I've seen in many other films. I couldn't really care what happened to them. It's not exactly a bad film. I just feel indifferent towards most of it.

You know it took me four viewings to appreciate Evil Dead Rise? I agree with your critique and I think the movie is pretty "safe" in the grand scheme of the franchise and its legacy, but I have grown to appreciate the things it does well. And it does many things well!

There are definitely elements there that I like: the initial sequence in the woods (and the title screen that follows), the claustrophobic apartment, the cheese grater... but it feels like those moments were sandwiched between a lot of other moments that I don't really care about. Maybe I'll rewatch it too!

I've yet to see Evil Dead Rises even though I'm a big fan of the franchise. Something weird has been going on with me and horror lately. I have loved horror movies for so long but now... I dunno, something about them scares me again. And not really in the fun way that makes you get into them in the first place. Like, just the Rises trailer makes me SUPER freaked out. It's really odd.

For me, it's the opposite haha The film must be really good to keep me on the edge of my seat. Plus, it often happens with psychological horror. This kind of gory, "action" horror is mostly for fun rather than for the scares. And I'm thankful for that because, for most of my childhood, Samara (from The Ring) absolutely haunted me! 😅
