My fear with eating only when I want to is that I don't eat enough. When I get angry, it's never "oh I want some food", it's "there is a monster in my belly scratching and screaming." It's not pleasant, especially when I just woke up and now I have to wrestle between "staying comfy in bed but feeling like my stomach want to get out" vs "going out into the cold hard world being on slow-motion, but knowing I will eventually get to eat something."

is this a typo meant to say "hungry"? i'm not sure what you're getting at. is it this "angry stomach" feeling of hunger that causes you to not eat much?
It it is a typo, I did mean hungry, although it does feel like my stomach is hungry.
