ok so im working on some software that i maybe want to take kind of seriously
what license should i give it?
i kinda want to do something edgy like one that disallows commercial use unless permission is explicitly granted

maybe this is to your liking? the same peeps also thought about another flavour called parity license, i think you would want prosperity though: "all in one non-commercial software license"
I use MPL 2.0 for anything I care about. It doesn’t prohibit commercial use, but it does require that any MPL-licensed files (including any modifications applied) be made public and shared under the same license. This allows for the code to be used in shared libraries or applications while not infecting the licensing of the whole (unlike GPL), but also enforces that everyone benefits from any modifications (so Amazon can’t pull an OpenSearch and fork your shit without giving back).
It’s not super spicy tho, if that’s your primary goal.
spiciness wasn't really a goal, more of a passing "wouldn't that be nice"
MPL 2.0 actually looks like a very nice middle ground, thank you!
if your goal is to disallow commercial use by default you can get pretty close by using GPL3 and providing a separate license upon request
