Opinions are everyone else's

sometimes the best course of action is to react less and have fewer opinions, especially if it's a thing you're not involved with at all.

man it can be a struggle online to do that. all the pressure is often to have an opinion on as much as possible, as loudly as possible. even if you're on a site that is trying to work against those pressures, they are so common on so many social media sites, you're going to get damaged from secondhand smoke.

but it's worth putting in the effort to counteract that pressure, and be quicker to apologize than you might want to be.

True! I’ve been attempting to have only high quality opinions, in line with my actual knowledge and expertise. And when I do overstep my bounds, I try to do so politely and deferentially. It’s hard to unlearn this idea that the hallmark of intelligence is being able to apply it everywhere, having an opinion on everything. But your opinions on things you don’t study will always be amateurish, and nobody thinks the jack of all trades is really that useful when the actual experts are a click or two away

I'm not great at fewer opinions or reacting less (thus far), but even just reacting less publicly has felt better when I've managed to do it.

I got worried about the itch.io thing when it was first brought up, but I didn't share it anywhere online, just talked about it with my partner. I saw that support/ban thing happening yesterday and was initially a bit concerned, but I didn't say anything and a couple hours later it was resolved.

I think that's what I realized yesterday - even if I can't stop myself from having feelings or opinions about something happening online, I don't have to immediately talk about them out in the open.
