Western gamers’ interpretation of the Visual Novel/Japanese Adventure game genre is interesting and frustrating because a lot of it is rooted in ignorance regardless of whether it is in good OR bad faith. In bad faith, people disregard them as games entirely or lump them in with also-erroneous conceptions of Dating Sims. But in good faith, we often interpret the few games we do get from that genre over here as major, instantaneous evolutionary leaps for the genre, since we never got the games which preceded them. I’m glad that knowledge of the genre’s history is becoming more widespread in recent years, but it will still take quite some time to undo the stigma that western gamers have inflicted upon such games here.
