like. if somebody on a website is giving me strange and unwanted vibes then i block them, and they go away. the problem is solved. i don't let it seethe away and eat at me and fire off unwanted replies to people who i have no connection whatsoever with

you could I guess say that about mastodon too, but I think there's a big difference in how moralized one's choice of social network is perceived to be. part of what has driven me away from mastodon repeatedly for years is the combination of suffocating expectations of posting etiquette combined with intense moralizing about how federated social media, or a specific subcategory of federated social media, is the only ethical social media to use ever or whatever. I don't really think anybody on cohost cares what social media networks other people use, or how other people on cohost use cohost generally speaking

The general complaints I see from outside cohost are:

  1. it's not cramming content into my eyes until I bleed so therefore it's bad
  2. "everyone" posts complete shit, somehow this is not my fault for the people I chose to follow and I'm not going to do legwork to search for cool people

I can kinda get this about Mastodon; there are a lot people there would love to get sanctimonious about social media platforms but Cohost? Outside our initial "we're so much better; this place is immune to drama" phase it's been pretty chill here...
