Nothing interesting

How difficult is it to find work in machine learning that is not, you know, making the world a worse place? What should I look for?

I'm asking because I am currently doing a certificate in applied computer science, and I am considering taking classes on machine learning and artificial intelligence. Also, I am extremely priviledge, money is not an issue for me, so I can take my time once I am on the job market.

depending on who you ask, including noted AI Ethicist Timnit Gebru, working in ML, especially with neural networks, is actively destroying the planet through rampant energy consumption.

Others would say you're making the world worse solely by buying/using tech in the first place, given the material conditions lithium and rare earth elements are mined in, the children assembling the devices at whatever foxconn or broadcom factory.

This is a hard question and probably an unhelpful answer, but a useful reframe in the decision tree of the mind is "how far up/down the production line do I feel comfortable with people dying for the thing I'm doing?" and going from there.
