Nothing interesting

this weeks torah reading, parsha Acharei Mot, is the one with the famous line "a man shall not lay with a man as he would a woman". It comes at the end of the parsha, with the rest of the parsha covering how to carry out the most important holiday in the calendar

a parsha is broken up into alliyot with a blessing and not much else said between each one. between the sixth alliah and the final one where this line is read, before the blessing was made, our rabbi instead invited up one of the community leaders who is a gay man who summarized some of his favorite "rainbow threads" or moments of queerness in our history and texts. he ended with "the line about to be read does not erase that tradition. the book of vayikra is a guide for building ones life, it should not be a weapon".

im just really impressed and surprised to see this in an Orthodox community. I was bracing myself to have at best people awkwardly avoiding mentioning it or a cishet tripping over trying to be an ally and at worst saying something that would make me feel less safe in this space. considering everything I was def more expecting the latter than the former. instead they actually framed it and grappled with it and aa I really love this new shul
