I opened the game I've been working on and it looked like this. Nothing had changed in both the program itself or the environment since the last run, but it was all fucked up. For some reason the HUD is just gone except the health value. I was able to move and tried a screen transition, but that locked it up completely. I shut it down and relaunched it and everything was normal again. I spent 20 minutes trying to reproduce whatever that was and couldn't.

The only two possible explanations:

  1. A gamma ray from an exploding start thousands of light years away flipped a nano-scale bit in my system that would fuck up only this sub-sub-system I was looking at through like 5 layers of virtualization
  2. Computers are magical beasts that enjoy tricking their users.

3: your ram is broken (my ram is broken) (theres like a 2mb range of ram that just reports values that are one bit off) (in linux i mitigated this but idk how in windows so every once in a while my computer just bluescreens because windows tried to use ram in that range to do important stuff)
